Rear View Mirror w/ Compass… in a D1???
Hi all,
I, like many of you, have the auto dimming rear view mirror with 2 reading lights and an on/off button for the dimming rear view mirror. Also like many of you, the rear view mirror has long since been functional with burn marks on the glass.
Today, while at a U-Pull-It I came across a 1998 D1 with a auto-dim compass rear view mirror. Pulled it, got home and did some research. It is Land Rover brand, but is marketed for 1999-2004 (Aka Discovery 2).
The thing is though that this rear view mirror was correctly plugged into the 1998 D1 I pulled it from? Anyone know if I should expect this to work in my D1??
Thanks

Those aren't "burn marks" on the mirror BTW. It's what's left over after the dimming material has partially 'leaked out' between the pieces of glass.... The dark is the material that's still there, the brighter region is the actual mirror where the dimming material not long is. The dimming material is really 'thick' but not a solid in the true sense of what a 'solid' is ....and can (and does) gradually seep down over the years if there is a gap out the side of the two glass panes (in the rear view mirror), esp out due to warm summer cabin heat ...and age. That's one reason I'm not a big fan of dimming mirrors. Even glass isn't really a solid with rigid locking of 'crystals' ...and believe it or not glass does 'flow' at room temperatures given enough time. If you take your mirror apart there will be 'goo' all along the bottom of it, or on the corners.
A mirror with a compass and outside temp is a really handy thing. I have one in my Hummer.

Reviving the D2 mirror to D1 question...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~
Hi jimvw57 or anyone...
still sorting out mirror changes...
Any chance a photo of a mated wiring job could be added for guidance?
I ask because my D1 has 1/grey - 2/white - 3/black & the D2 mirror has 3 wires colors: 1/grey - 2/red - 3brown.
How should these mate up; what color to what color?
I'm taking a chance this thread will pop up again with some new info.
It's a nice simple upgrade when your old mirror leaks out (if the wiring can work).
Any helpful new information out there?
Thanks for the time.
I put the D2 mirror on my D1 and it added the compass and the homelink buttons (which I don't use) I played with it before putting it in to see what wires did what.
Went out and looked, here is what worked for me.
D1 Mirror
Grey Green/Brown
Black Black
White Green/White
Hopefully you got the connector (both ends) to make it easier, and the plastic that goes around the mount to cover up the wires.
