Default Removal of License plate

Just got a 98 Discovery and cant get the rear plate off. It has four screws with allen heads on them. They just spin when turned. Do I need to pull the interior panel off to gain access to the rear of the screw to possibly grab a nut thats back there? Thanks for your help.

Welcome to Disco ownership! It's not a type of vehicle, it's a mental condition! I managed to remove mine by putting a bit of side pressure while turning them. You are going to want to repair this problem anyway, so go ahead & remove the trim so you can put it together correctly. Hot glue is not synonymous with "correctly" either... flippin' PO!

yeah the previous owner of my car had this problem so he just cut the late off and drilled holes for the new plate, this does work because the car is AL so don't worry about rust, but i wouldn't recommend this.

Get some high quality silver "Gorilla" brand duck tape and tape it over the other one.

Just make sure you keep the tape even all around and try not to let it wrinkle up on you. I hate it when duck tape is not put on neatly.

I bought the little tags that look like license plates but they have my granddaughters names on them. I duck taped them right under the license plate, the kids love it.

you need to pop off the subs and go in from there. Take some vise grips and hold the back while turning the front. The fasteners are designed to be pushed into the door skin and stay there rivnuts or something like that. Spray them with some pb blaster and let it soak first. Remember that the harder you hold, the more they distort on the bolt. Try to be gentle. You may end up drilling them out. I did. Just use nuts on the back next time around.
