Replaced Transmission, have shudder from 3rd to 4th
I recently had the transmission in my 1999 DI replaced with a used tranny with 75k miles on it. I now notice that right after it shifts from 3rd to 4th there is a shudder for a second and then it goes away. The mechanic thinks that it is just the torque converter locking up and that it is completely normal. Any ideas. In addtion, when shifting from a forward drive gear to reverse, there is a noticable clunk. The u-joints are all in good shape, as is the transfer case, as far as I know. Thoughts? Thanks Phil
I want to get these matters fixed before the warranty expires.

Mine has that clunk too when going into reverse. These drivelines have a certain amount of "slop" in them and it can sometimes be difficult to tell if it is just the normal slop or a problem developing. The "slop" I refer to (as was explained in another recent post) is due to the engaging of the gears because it is all time four wheel drive or something like that. I don't know enough about tranny's to tell you for sure why they do that. But some clunk is normal.
Phil, if you don't have it already, download the rave below, it has road diagnostics for the trans in it.
You're mech been into the can of molybednium disulfide again, the lockup occurs @52mph on accel, out at 48mph on deccel in forth gear.
If the "new" has been sitting, it may be a little sticky, these things are bullitproof if maintained
Mine clunks, it's excessive ring gear backlash (on mine) about a two hr fix (per differential) for a decent mechanic. (Per Rave, it's actually easy)
luck,greg

Did you change the tranny fluid in the process? I had something like this happen to me once with my pick-up after a fluid change. I was at witts end and ready to pull the trigger on a new tranny and I read on the internet about the fluid and shudder. A few posts suggested changing to Penzoil as it contains a higher amount anti-shudder agents. I figured I didn't have that much to lose, so I did it. The shudder went away within about 30 miles and has never come back since. That was 4 years ago. There are companies that also produce an anti-shudder additive. Ask at your local NAPA as they would probably have it. Anyway, hope this helps.
