Battery is about dead, alarm tripped, car won't let you crank because alarm thinks you are trying to steal it. Must use driver door to unlock and disable alarm. May have to charge battery up. Is red light on or flashing on instrument panel above steering wheel?

Close the door, lock it with the key.
Wait 5 min, unlock it with the key.
Now start it.

sorry posted under the wrong one first. my drivers door won't unlock bc it's broken. it will only lock. I then unlocked from the passenger side then unlocked the drivers door from inside. now it won't start and the alarm goes off every time I try to turn the engine over.

The alarm on/off switch is operated by driver door lock cylinder. Try unlocking motion even if it does not physically unlock the door. Truck believes that you are Robin Hood and you plan to steal the crown jewels.

Theres your problem, it thinks you are trying to steal it.
Sit in the drivers seat and close all doors, push down on the drivers door lock and lock all doors.
Wait a few minutes, then pull up on the drivers door lock to unlock all the doors, then open the drivers door, close drivers door and try to start the truck.

Then do this.

Turns out it was a bad key, the previous owner had new brass keys made for it and real Land Rover keys are from stainless steel. The Brass only last a short time before going bad. The driver's door lock wasn't broken it could just tell the key wasn't authentic.

Doesn't make sense. Does the '98 have a key sensor in it that detects metal types? My understanding is that the door locks have a linkage to the actuator. If the key is worn out, it will not turn the tumbler, thereby not unlocking the vehicle and disabling the alarm. Sounds like the tumbler in your drivers door is worn, not the key.
