Should I buy?

Should I buy?
G'day Land Rover folks!
I took a look around the net and this seems to be the best place for Land Rover information.
I'm looking for some advice.
I took a look at a 2001 Land Rover Discovery SE today and am not sure if I should take the plunge or not. The truck has been sitting for several years and was parked when both the Heater Core and the brake lines went south. Since then, the tires have cracked and gone flat, the alternator has rusted solid. Because of the Alternator, the truck can not be started and therefore, I can't confirm that the truck actually runs. I could remove the alternator and put in a new battery but don't really want to start wrenching on the truck in the owners yard.
The owner swears the truck was running fine, minus the Heater Core and the brakes before it was parked and is asking $1900.00. He has had no interest for several months. I was thinking about offering $1000.00 but am concerned that if the the Engine and Transmission are shot, I would not be able to get my $1000.00 back if I were to part it out. There is no apparent rust on the body except for a little surface rust on the metal pieces on the door trim etc. I'm not sure, but I think the body may be aluminum?
Any input into what the truck is worth as well as opinions one way or the other would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Chris
Sorry... I guess I should have posted this in the DII section.

Depends on a few things: A) If its bad you could use the parts on another DII. B ) Do you have a place to park it? C ) For a non confirmed runner I would say $900-$1100 is the MAX you should spend to get it. If he doesn't want to take it tell him to call you when he finally wants to get rid of it. D) How mechanical are you?
Note I got a 2001 DII running with 174k for $2400.
