Default "Slop on the swivel"

Went to get the Discovery inspected.
Passed everything except the left front. The inspector said there is play and I asked if it was a wheel bearing and he said no it's on that weird knuckle thing.

Would this be considered swivel preload? Is this plausable? How to remedy?

Thanks!

When did you last remove, clean, repack or replace your bearings, how about your swivels, when were they last inspected, fluid changes and pre-load set?

I recently repacked all my outer bearings. I had alot of slop on the right front which could be contstrued as swivel ball slop but it was not. Best advice is to lift each front corner in the air and place your hands at 12 and 6 then 10 and 4 and then 9 and 3 and try and move the tire back and forth at each one. Depending on which one has movement it will tell you what actually has slop.

12 and 6 is bearings, 10 and 4 is suspension link bushings and 9 and 3 are steering generally. Exception to this rule is if something is waaay out of wack. But that should be obvious when checking.

Yes, your swivel preload is too light. However, if he can visually see the play then they are worn bad enough you need a full rebuild kit.

Is never a valid answer?

Any of the Rover parts supply houses will have them.
I usually get stuff from:
www.dap-inc.com
or
www.rovahfarm.com
or in the UK.

How do I know which one I need?
My Rover has ABS.
Thanks.

Update: Just jacked it up and grabbed the wheel at 6 and 12. You can clearly see the play, almost like a Ford ball joint.
