So I Tried Spikes Straight 30 weight
If you are consuming oil, you are blaming it on the wrong thing. Oil weight for the most part won't cause you to blow oil, unless of course you have bad rings, which is real uncommon on our engines. If you were loosing that much oil then you would be blowing a fair amount of smoke when you accelerate.
I'm running 20w50 at the advice of a Rover mechanic I know, and I don't seem to lose too much. The only times I get an oil light on longer than normal is when she's sat for a few days. I might drop it to 10w40 this winter, depending on how much I drive it.
Wow. I put about 3K per year on mine, though I do live on an island and getting to work has to be via ferry boat to Seattle. Driving across would be way too expensive (like $30 per day for drive-on fees, not including fuel for the Rover).
I did have a 500 mile/week commute when I lived in San Francisco (to San Jose and back 5 days/week), but that was in a Honda Civic, so I didn't sweat the fuel or maintenance costs.
Maybe you could find a used Civic and drive that into the ground and give your Rover a break.

Exactly....I save my Rover for drives that I need/want it on. It's a hell of a lot cheaper to do upkeep on my Chevy, the less wear and tear on my Disco, the better.
But hey, I'm not throwing stones, I wish I could drive my Disco every day. My Chevy W/T 1500 SUCKS to drive.
I would definitely find something else for the daily commute. That Disco will last a lot longer that way. I had a Quality Consulting and Auditing gig for a few years when we relocated from the Space Coast Region of Florida to my wife's hometown of Pittsburgh PA. Since I was on a contract with Timken at their bearing mfg facility in Ohio making parts for Ford, I bought a brand new 96 Ford Bronco XLT for my winter work vehicle. I was putting over a thousand miles a week on it with them paying me for milage and perdiem and lodging.
That Bronco was awesome originally, but you could watch the front tires wear weekly. It did get awesome milage for a full size, full time 4wd, but in three years, I put 200k on it.
The body was rusting away, and it was eating front hubs like candy. Awesome in the snow, but worn out after three hard years. I replaced it with two fun to drive vehicles - an 86 MB 420SEL and an 86.5 Porsche 928. Each one was a pleasure to drive.

Nope im gonna keep on truckin.
Im not looking to preserve anything, I mean by driving it what gets worn, engine? transmission? Bearings Steering? So what Id rather know my truck is reliable to get me anywhere. Bearings, steering and engine are all regular maintenance on a discovery.
Im not planning on selling it, so 100k or 400k [i HOPE] doesn't matter.
I have considered a motorcycle, but with the unpredictable weather [rain] and the fact that I am cold blooded in the mornings. It would get used 2 months out of the year, plus id probably die on it.
I have been begining to envy jeeps with their fricken roofless wranglers. Im starting to want one. Though that wouldn't help me with gas at all.
Im not driving an old beater, the added insurance and maintenance plus upfront cost wouldn't make it worth it at all.
Point is most jobs aren't this far away there more like half the distance.

If you want a Jeep, I just completed a 5.3 vortec Chevy conversion in a Wrangler. It will burn all 4 44" tires in 4WD. The axles were already upgraded, and it is just a beast now. It is from a 2007, so it has the DOD system, and it actually works. 22MPG on the highway...
