Default Sourcing a Radiator

Looks like my old original radiator finally threw in the towel, and after 20 years has decided to **** transmission fluid all over the place. Does anyone know of a good aftermarket source for a replacement that won’t break the bank? I see a lot of aluminum 4 - core radiators online, with claims that they increase cooling capacity significantly. Does anyone have any experience with these? Any help and advice would be most appreciated, thank you!

A Nissens 64029 seems to be the general consensus as the best replacement. Most people will recommend a re-core over replacement, but if it's leaking transmission fluid, it doesn't sound like that's an option... I replaced my original blocked up radiator with a Nissens as the only local shop who would touch it quoted me $200 -over- the price of a new Nissens just to re-core the thing. 64029 is $290 but well worth it IMO. People have had some success with the aluminum 4-core ones but apparently you have to make some modifications to the mounting in order to get it to work. I didn't want to monkey around with any of that so I just swapped them. Unless I'm grossly mistaken, the Nissens is a 3-row aluminum w/ plastic tanks. Some people say they've had plastic-tanked radiators leak in cold weather, some people say they're fine, all depends on who you talk to. I haven't had any trouble with mine, but I live in Florida. What I can say for cooling capacity is that in 80 degree weather, my D1 runs in the 185-190 range, much cooler than what many people say is the expected range of operation. That being said, it does also have a fresh head gasket job and water pump, so there are probably additional factors there.

$290 at Rock Auto is a good deal for that unit.

Ended up with a $50 OE boneyard special, and back on the road after some therapeutic wrenching
