You must understand the PO installed a new engine and tranny in it in august.
The top bolt and bottom bolt are the same, exactly. The bolt diameter is 3/8", coarse(16) thread. A 9/16" socket/wrench is what would be used for a hex head bolt. A 14mm would work in a pinch.
For the original socket head screws its either a 7mm or 8mm allen wrench.

What engine/tranny did the PO install? I would be concerned that somthing isnt correct given the socket sizes you used.

The Denso starters are new, not rebuilt, plus gear reduction. A much better starter all around.
After having one for 5 or 6 years I wouldn't even consider an OE starter.

Certainly a better quality starter. But since there is no store around to get this, before the start of the holidays I'll have to live with what is immediately available

Are those the bolts that came off the starter? Those bolts look nothing like the stock bolts? What size/thread are they?

Yes they are. It's ok. Makes removal much easier. Those Allen head bolts blow.
I don't know, it really doesn't matter as they fit and work very well. I am certain when the engine and tranny was replaced they were changed out.

Those must be "Coffee-Can" bolts.

Yeah.
I don't know about the top one in the photo, but the bottom one looks like a grade 2. They should both be at least grade 5.
