Stick a fork in her, she's moving on 1997 D1
Weds of last week I got a call from my son that the 97 disco died and wouldn't turn over. I suspected the worst, but thought it might be a bad starter. Ordered a cheap rebuilt starter and headed over to check it out (roughly 60 miles each way) and replaced the starter in an empty parking lot. It started right up and I drove it roughly 2-3 blocks when it started hammering loudly. It then died and again wouldn't turn over. Sounded like a rod or a cylinder sleeve let loose. Thus the end of this vehicle. The plan was to have it towed and scrapped near where it died, but I posted on Facebook about it's demise. I got a message from a fellow Rover enthusiast who is working on a 2A, new motor and gearbox, but is concerned about using the stock axles and differentials. He is interested in picking it up and stealing arts for his 2A. so it will be sporting 4 wheel disc brakes and a much stronger set of axles. I would much rather pass this on to someone who can use the parts to put another LR on the road than to scrap it out.
As sad as I am about losing this truck, I feel better knowing it will be put to good use. I wish him luck and safe motoring with his project!!
