Default Stock cross rails. Any good?

Hi there. I'm new to these cars. My Disco 1 has the stock rails and cross bars. I'm wondering if they are actually strong enough to carry any load. Like a kayak for example. They look pretty flimsy and the plastic lugs that click into the side rails, don't fill me with confidence. Anyone tried using them for actual load carrying?

^ I carry my canoe up there all the time.
I've hauled sheets of plywood/etc on them as well when I don't care to toss my roof rack on.

Thanks guys. I'll set it up and see if it feels solid enough.

I'm not a fan of the stock crossbars, but I've used Thule feet/bars on the stock rails to haul my canoe.

I should have checked the Owners Manual first (Doh!). Specifies maximum load of 50kg (110 lbs) secured to side rails only and on road only. I can make that work.
