Question Stock running boards - rubber moulding issue

Hi,

I am helping my brother tidy up little annoyances on his '99 Discovery 1.

The stock side running boards have rubber that goes around the edges, but it is currently falling off in some areas.

Is there a trick to re-applying the rubber? It appears to be grooved, but a major PITA to slip back on. Also, should there be an adhesive?

See pic for visualization.

Thanks

see the rubber is separating from the metal. Without the rubber, that side step/running board is jagged.
