T-case and diff lube, ATF questions
Getting ready to work on my new to me 98' Disco. I want to change all of the fluids.
The Rave shows 90w for the diffs and t-case. I have a bunch of Valvoline synthetic 75-140 on hand, is this an acceptable substitute?
What about the swivel housings? I'm seem to recall reading that most are running grease instead of gear oil? If so, grease recommendations?
What are your thoughts on synthetic ATF? The truck has 120k miles on it. I have some service history but no record of ATF change/flush. The ATF is very dirty but not burnt.

- I use 75-140 and a lot of members here recommend it.
- Rover makes a swivel housing grease, all the various vendors carry it, it comes in a plastic squeeze tube with a little teat at the end. You cut the end of the teat off and squeeze the contents into the housing. One tube per housing
- I think the synthetic vs dino oil is personal choice. Not getting into that discussion. Kinda like discussing religion.

As for the ATF, consider Vavoline's High Mileage for vehicles over 75,000 miles. Also consider adding a bottle of Lucas tranny additive for even better results.
You might want to consider doing 2 drain and refills so you can get rid of most of that old fluid, will cost you more in fluid but the tranny will be a lot healthier. If you do that, then add the Lucas to your second refill.

Thanks for the feedback. 75/140 it is, this works great as I have about 10 qts of the stuff.
For the ATF, what are the pros and cons of the high mileage Valvoline stuff? Same for the Lucas additive.
Are there any procedures for flushing the trans? On my Powerstroke truck I unhook a cooler line, add ATF with the truck running to pump fluid out until it all looks clean. IMO, this works great to flush everything out. I have not poked around under the rover for any hoses that are easy to access nor do I want to damage my trans.

Both the high mileage ATF and the lucas will help keep the tranny shifting much better, free up the valves and prevent internal pressure loss.
Just 2 2 drain and refills and you will be fine, somewhere are 11 quarts plus the Lucas.

Should I drop the pan and replace the filter?
DO NOT use full syn ATF in ANY transmission that did not come with full syn ATF from the factory.
I never use any additives, just use a good brand name fluid and you will be good to go.
Additives actually counter act the additive package thats all ready in the fluid you are using.
Change the filter in the trans, use the Maxlife and you will be fine.

Synthetics don't "stiffen" up in cold weather. They provide the same consistency cold or hot and don't break down like dino does, in case you forget your mileage between changes....... Cold morning driveline warm ups don't exist. This is speaking of the thirds and tc. Your choice. Some of us remove our inner CV shaft seals and let the diff fluid run back and forth to keep the CV's bathed. YMMV. Try changing 00 grease......good luck.
