Double check your work.
Double check that "new" alt is good.

Does anyone know what the input from the alternator to the tach is supposed to be?

I want to try reading with a meter to help isolate what my problem is.

8 vac I think is what the Rave calls for, it has been a while, but I had to change my alt for the same reason (changed it twice now!)

Yes. Tach and Temp Guage magically returned to life right after restoring the electrical connector.
