Just recently my 95 w/246,000kms, automatic, started to have this light tick/tap sound coming from the top of engine area which increases with revs and then disappears. Thinking rockers I changed oil (20-50w) and added lucas oil treatment(old oil had about approx 3000 kms on it 10-40w). It seemed to quiet it down but wondering if this is a sign of something coming and/or what should I do as preventive maintenance.
Truck is in very good clean condition.

Also, sounds like you're hearing the tappets, proly time for a top end rebuild.

High Octane???? meaning fuel not high enough? Would it go away with an oil change if it was fuel related. On original post I meant to say tappets and not rockers...

I went to the Valvoline Max Life Synthetic Blend and it made a heck of a difference. I always use 93 octane.

If you are adding a oil treatment to your oil then you are actually reversing the properites of the oil.
Car maintenance bibles: Oil Additives
I would switch to a highly detergent motor oil to clean out any sludge you might have built up.

Ok.... which high detergent oil would be recommended....and which weight or blend?
I really appreciate all this info....truck is in exceptional condition and would like to have it running reliable for my son or daughter to travel with.

Hmmmm.....I guess it COULD be the tappets, and time to rip the top apart. Of course, it could also be an exhaust leak, like mine, that makes the exact sound, and was corrected in 15 minutes with my welder....

Sliding piston sleeve is also a possibility. They get hot, loosen up ad start to move about all ***** nilly.
