Default tranny/t case trouble

yesterday it was about 20 degrees in Ohio, so I jumped into my 98 disco work truck start it up put it in drive move about 5 feet and the truck stops all forward momentum. Check tranny fluid level make sure the t case didn't get bumped into neutral all checks out. Still not moving.....check to make sure the gearshift selector cable did not break (it is fine). Chock up the wheels and put a 4x4 behind the wheels and leave the car in drive. The front shaft is rotating, the back is not. When the car is in park, the truck still moves......bad tranny busted t case or park pawl Any body care to guess what the problem might be?.

Dont think so. Its been that cold before and have not dipped the rear diff in water this year...i am thinking tranny or t case. The rear driveshaft is not spinning.
thanks for the suggestion

No. Job for the weekend. Would not think that it would just quit. No grinding or signs of granading the tcase

Tom would it burn up driving forward 5 feet?? If so wouldn't i hear noise?
Sat i am going to loosen the line in the tranny cooler to make sure the pump is working. Next im going to replace the filter in hopes that the o rings or the plastic pick up broke up, came loose. Its my weekend work truck so if it is not an inexpensive fix its getting "retired".

Yeah fluid level is fine, fluid is not burnt. Its odd cause it did not granade like they sometimes do. It kinda just quit. I would normally suspect the pump. But the front drive shaft still moves but does not drive the vehicle. That is the part that is odd to me!

Did you try put transfer case in diff lock?

If the front drive shaft is spinning and nothing moves sounds like you broke the front diff / cv / axle so losing all the power at broken part

There's only so many parts in drivetrain
