Default Transfer Case Shifting Wonkiness

I'm having an issue with my 4 x 4 shifter. When it's in normal driving position back into the right., The shift lever can be laterally move side to side as though it's in neutral even though it is in gear.

Coming out of the mountains this weekend it did not want to shift out of 4 low even after I had already moved the lever back into all time high range.

Then I noticed driving it later that the shifter lever felt really loose. Do those linkages break regularly? If so I can't figure out a fun way to try to get to them.

I'm having a difficult time understanding the sequence of events.

Let's agree to call it "Locked <---> Unlocked" (the right/left movement of the handle)

and "HI - LO" ... forward= LO rearward= HI

Yeah I don't know how to explain. Or if there's even a problem. Just started having trouble shifting out of Locked - Lo. Everything seems to be ok right now after driving around a bit today. Just got a lot more movement in the shift *** than usual.
