Default Transmission fluid correct level on dipstick?

Hey so I'm probably going to sound like an idiot but I have just recently bought a 1993 Land Rover Disco V8i and in topping up the transmission fluid I managed to over fill it. And so I released a sump plug from directly in line under the gear stick (Auto) and it seemed to have worked in dropping the fluid level on the dipstick to the cold mark, then I took it for a drive to warm er up and it went to top mark. Today however I took for run again into town and I got a funny noise coming the center console (gear stick). I pulled over checked the transmission dipstick and it was about an inch above the top mark. Can someone please explain what have I done wrong

The level mark on the dipstick should be for cold reading. When the transmission fluid is warm it will expand and read higher. Ignore the high reading when it’s hot.
