I am pretty good normally and I looked at the but when I unbolted the part where the thermostat is suppose to be and there wasnt any thermostat! So now I am wondering if I am looking at the right place and if yes, which side is the thermostat going!!

Also, people don't just remove the Tstat for no reason. It's a $15 part at best and takes no more effort to replace than it does to remove the old one. The most common reason the Tstat gets pulled is because the truck is running on the hot side.
the temperature gauge on the dash is virtually useless, and once it indicates that you are running hot you are pretty much cooked. if it is indicating anything over the slightly under 9 o'clock position, it's too hot. these motors are pretty sensitive to overheating, and the last thing you want to do is cook a head gasket. is your 96 obd2?
