What do I do?
Mechanic says hot oil change... clean out engine, free up lifter...
crazy step dad says... put some transmission fluid in there, that'll clean er out.
the tick is annoing... what do I do without tearing the head off and cleaning or replacing it myself. (if this is generally undertaken to rid myself of this tick then that is what we will do.) other options?
scott.

If you have ticks then you also need to be checked for fleas...
DO NOT USE ATF IN THE CRANK CASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a old wives tale and you will risk spinning a bearing.
Just switch to good old diesel oil, change it every 1,000 miles for the next 2-3 oil changes, then stick with the diesel oil or use a full synthetic oil.
15w-40 for the diesel oil for warm weather, 5w-40 for cold weather.
If you use a full syn then use a 10w-40.
Make sure you use a good oil filter too.
Both diesel oil and full syn are very high in detergents.
After the 2-3 oil changes with diesel oil whichever you choose to use make sure you do not go any longer than 5,000 miles between oil changes.

why not just take apart the engine and check?
DO THIS.
Remove intake manifold
Remove Valve Cover
Remove Vally Gasket
Check lifters
Only thing is you will need a new VALLY gasket [I believe]
