Weird Shifting/Brake Sensor Issue
Hi All,
I have a 1999 Disco I SD.
My Disco will cutoff on me while idling at traffic lights and then when I start it back up it won't shift out of park and into drive!
I kinda get a warning when it's about to happen because my tail light assembly stops working ( signal reverse brake lights).
I was told my brake sensor is bad but what does that have to do with it not wanting to shift out of park? The brake sensor got changed but still having the same problem.
Also noted that everytime I cranked it up after it cutout it blew a fuse and it kept blowing a fuse and I had to up 2 fuse ratings for it not to blow so now I'm paranoid that it might cause a fire but that's the only way it would come out of the park gear.
Any ideas?

Check your rear lamp bulb sockets, brake lamp being lit is part of that circuit. I've had the socket "melt" enough to open the circuit. Put a resettable breaker in the one you've upped the rating on and trace through the circuit... Russ
Here's what the socket looked like when I pulled it out
I tried replacing the top socket but the casing that it goes into is so bent and deformed that I can't fit another socket in there.

LOL yes it is my friend.
Any ideas on this issue? Will I have to remove the seats or pull up carpet to trace the wire? I'm hoping the taillight assembly replacement will do the trick

Had the same issue with my brake lights, the socket you pictured is definitely a problem. I ended up replacing the whole assembly and the brake light socket was missing. Seems they are hard to find right now and I pretty much cut mine and rebuilt it to make it work. The shifter needs to see the brakes applied before it will shift out of park. I got stuck at work once with the same problem, I ra a jumper wire from the rear window defroster to the 3rd brake light and turned on the defroster to activate the brake circuit and it shifted out of park so I could get home. I replaced the brake light switch.
There are 2 different switches depending on if you have a manual or auto transmission. I had mine out when I went to O'Rieleys auto parts and they had them reversed in their book. Saved me an extra trip to get the right one.
The wires for the back end go through the headliner on the drivers side, not under the carpet.

Light housings should take care of the park lock feature. Slow moving engine cutout is separate, it’s root cause can be hard to trace with guesswork. Have the codes pulled by a shop, a parts store or buy the reader outright, OBDII spec. The codes can give you an idea or can be misleading because they where generated after the initial failure. You have to sift the flour. My initial guess is the engine was fairly hot, the heat will effect older sensors (people) that had lived a good life.

Thanks and I'll post an update..

The tail light assembly showed the sockets already in there in the picture so I'm hoping they're included.
I'll see when it gets here Monday. Thanks for the info..
i have an automatic.
Someone put a paperclip on my brake light sensor as pictured and it worked once but didnt get me all the way home.
