Default Wet electricals

With all the rain, I have had intermittent electrical malfunctions that I thought I would share with you fellow Discovery Drivers.

My windows have gotten intermitttent while driving but work fine after cutting engine off and turning key back on. Canhear relay clicking when this occurs.

Key lock would not release the ignition key even with tranny in park. I disconnected the negative battery cable, key then released. Problem repeated sporadically for a few days. I recall a couple of new comers were having problems with their key release, thought I woulkd pass along my findings regarding removing the battery cable to free up the key. Not a complete fix, but something good to know if it happens to you one day.

The neutral chime started sounding, I noticed the high/ low shifter had been vibrating slightly, so I put tranny in neutral, shifted the t/c from high to low setting, drove about 100 feet, shifted back into high, chime quit sounding.

Also when this occurred, key did not want to release.

Tach got intermittent, quit working for about 5 minutes, then suddenly came back to life.

Ain't these things fun to deal with?

Alternator? ECU or other large connectors got water in them (dielectric grease would be good)?

I found the window malfunction to be a broken wire at the back of the window switch plug in socket. To fix the problem I ended up just deleting the plug in socket, crimped new spade lugs onto the four affected wires and plugged them right onto the window switch contact blades since they fit thye blades well but would not fit into the rear of thegreen plastic socket piece. The LR original contacts are not a common type of contact so that made replacement a bit more challenging but I had some contacts on hand that fit so I decided to delete the plastic piece and just taped over the rear of the switch after verifying it worked.

Be careful, sounds like your alternator. Thats what happened to me. Key wouldn't release. Then I got the key to release and the a/c fans were on (December)...
