Default What is this switch on the rear door?

I am having a problem with the rear door (hatch) lock tab falling down into the locked position, as if the spring is bad or something. I"m talking about the exposed stick thing, that goes up and down on the rear door to lock or unlock. I can open the rear door if i put the key in and turn it to the unlock position. Anyways.. I was thinking about taking the door panel off and trying to fix it or maybe even just putting a spring around that tab, and run a little screw into the tab to give the spring something to push on.

Also, what is this switch?

Fromthe owner's manual (that is where the decal says to look)

Child locks
Move the locking levers to the ’ON’ position
(as illustrations) to engage.
With the child locks engaged, neither the rear
doors nor the tailgate can be opened from
inside the vehicle, thereby avoiding the risk of
a door being opened accidentally while the
vehicle is moving.

I know what you mean about the lock tab falling down. Mine does too so I put an O ring around it to keep it up, but then using the electric locks pulls it down again. Apparently there's a complicated little coil spring that is broken or missing inside the lock mechanism - I keep thinking I should fix mine but something else always seems to come up.

Thanks for the info! I don't have a manual to look it up in. I'll take a picture of my spring rigging when I get around to it so you can copy.

You can download the owner's manual and workshop manual from this site - they are really helpful.

That said, I just looked through the body repair and workshop manuals at the rear door mechanism and don't see a spring that keeps the door lock tab up. Anyone have a photo or a place to look? Is it part of the electric lock actuator or is it a separate spring?

bump...

I have the same issue on my RR door. I haven't pulled it apart yet, but is there any more info on this subject? I wouldn't mind just deactivating the child lock mech and keep using...

wmlj970e.pdf = workshop manual....aka: RAVE. The bible for these trucks

etlj970x.pdf - electrical troubleshooting manual. you'll eventually need it

hl01561n.pdf - owner's manual... highly optional

Also, put the model/year/mileage in your signature line so that we are all on the same page.
