Why can't the auto trans be a 5speed on a disco?

Agreed by a small amount.
This is because the traditionally an auto transmission was always in converter phase; the portion of torque transference where internal fluid flow inside the torque converter stops multiplying torque and the turbine loses efficiency due to fluid stagnation over a fixed stator. This robbed the engine of fuel efficiency.

First improvement was that the stator was placed on a sprague clutch so that it would free wheel over that clutch as seen today. Then a lock up clutch was added at the start of converter phase. The slip is then eliminated and torque transference emulates a solid friction clutch as in most manual transmissions. (Like D1)

To improve shifting and fuel consumption even further, the transmission was then controlled by electronics. Essentially being fitted with a bi-directional communicator module, the engine shift point scan be precisely programmed to create a shift at peak torque applications. This gives smooth power flow through the shift range which results today in lower fuel consumption. With the current transmission found in platforms like the D2, there is no lock up feature in lower gears hence the slight trade off in fuel consumption. (like D2)

As we know there has been further transmission improvements with Hybrid designs where several speeds have been eliminated and electric motors installed in their place; the Allison in the Yukon Hybrid comes to mind. Running at about 330Volts DC, the traditional power to launch of an electric motor (max torque /power at zero revolutions) over an ICE gives the vehicle a distinct edge over it simpler ICE powered electronic auto transmission of the last century currently found in all current Landrovers.

I suppose the ultimate design is the unit found in the Prius working on a single eppicyclic gear pack with infinite variable gear ratios the acceleration or power to launch is simply phenomenal. Also with it comes power regen an almost unique feature setting this transmission apart but still employing an old fashioned eppicyclic pack design as the Landrover.
