Default Wont start.... click

Well, I've experienced my first issue with my 98 D1..... What I thought was a bad battery has turned out to be something else. I did a road trip, 300 miles or so round trip, to my property in antelope valley and when I topped off w/ gas on the way back, it didnt want to start, as if the battery was dead. I got a jump from the guy next to me and we were on our way. The next day, yesterday, I went to autozone to get a new battery, installed it and it didnt even turn over. I hear the starter just click, so I'm guessing it may be that but hoping for something simpler. How do you get the heat shield off of the starter I guess is gonna be my first question?

thanks in advance...

Check all connections to ground first.

I haven't removed the heat shield on mine so I'm not sure on that, but you should try and jump the starter before you pull it out. There are two connections on the starter, main power (big) and start (little). Take a little jumper wire (or anything metal really) and jump the two together. Also you need to check for bad/lack of ground to the starter, so you can do the jumper test with a known good ground from the battery (use something heavy like jumper cables for this)

Also known as the screw driver test, use a screw driver to jump the 2 connections.

I noticed it said the shield is held in place by a spring clip.... are the bolts a pain to get to?

.....grounds appear to be good. havent jumped the starter yet, but considering how it had been starting prior to this incident, i'm thinking it was on its way out

The shield wi just pop off. It's one spring clip that goes around the body of the starter but that won't get it entirely off. It'll only let you pull it further away from the body of the starter to get at the terminals. If you're under the car the heat shield comes off easy. Just push it toward the passenger fender and up a little bit. It'll pop right off.

HOW DID YOU CHECK THE GROUND? Mine was very temperamental until I cut off the existing corroded lug and let it attached, stripped the cable back and crimped a new lug on and grounded it to a new frame location with a large self drilling bolt. My replacement starter is still sitting on my garage shelf until it is really needed.

Also to gain easy access to the starter i used a pair of aviation tin snips on that inner fender wall, folded it out of the way, accessed what I needed then folded the fender back into place. Much easier than any other access.

checked everything I could think of with a volt meter..... replaced the starter and it fires right up. took about two hours total. broke a swivel that was at the end of my extension...sending my elbow into the firewall. i stood there and asked myself why i get myself into this kinda $&it for a few mins as it swelled up to the size of a baseball. finished it basically one armed after a beverage break and a few cuss words.

at the moment..... I still love my rover
