so the k&n for the stock airbox lets in more particles than a paper filter, but you say in theory that a cone filter has more surface area therfore less pressure to suck in the particles, but the function of the acctual filter material is the same.

Yes DII MAF's are junk, but cheap.
DI MAF's are really durable (like a true off road truck) but expensive, if you can get one from a junked DI do it, they are $1600 new.

Wow, I had no idea they were that expensive. I am going to start checking the local place for recycled ones. I'll see how much they are going for.

Default Spectre works nicely for me too.

I saw this thread this morning while cruzing the threads for info on brake bleeding so today after bleeding my brake lines I went up to autozone and saw the spectre cone air filter for $24.99. I bought it, brought it home and installed it in about 2 minutes using the 3.5'' ring. I had not cranked my D1 in about an hour since running up and down my street to test the brakes and I knew I had some bad O2 sensors which I thought were causing me to have to grind on the ignition for about 10 seconds when cold cranking....with the specter air intake filter on it cranked right up! I will need to cold crank a few more times to say definitely if this filter is a miracle pill however.
Just to see how the new filter performed I went out for a spin around the block and I noticed a little more punch from a dead stop. I would estimate I gained about 5hp in putting this new air intake on. Can't wait to spec my fuel consumption when I fill-up next.

p.s. I let my temp sensor dangle too - doesn't seem to affect how it runs (in a negative way). If it does I'll just drill a hold and run the wires through it so the sensor is inside the intake tube

Well at least you guys can see how dirty your air filter is everytime you check the oil. lol

Keep us posted on this guys.
Let us know how quickly, if at all, your throttle body gets dirty or if you suck in water while driving through a puddle or wading.
