Default Is $1,200 a good deal for service?

Took my 2004 Disco to a local independent shop and was quoted $500 for the 60k service and $700 for replacement of all brake pads and rotors with original factory parts. Given what the dealer would charge for the same service and the cost of original parts on the web (LandroversNorth), this seems very reasonable.

My plan is to have them do the service unless you all think this is unreasonable or have any serious precautions.

Most of this work is very easy, even for the novice mechanic. Those prices don't seem out of line to me, but if you have a free Saturday you can do all of that for under $600. Check the brake specials from Atlantic British and shop around for the parts for the 60k service - should be plenty of postings here on that, including a "sticky" at the top of the forum.

Those prices are what I would have paid at the best indy Rover shop in Queens, NY. Around here that would be on the high side. It depends where you are located. But like was said above now that i know how easy they are, paying for a brake job is tough to swallow.

Do it yourself and save, we can walk you thru this stuff, you can save around $400 on the brakes and $250 or more on the service.

You could def save cash doing it yourself, but $500 for a 60k service is very cheap in these parts.

If you are doing all new brakes and rotors I would suggest upgrading to something better than factory parts. Drilled and slotted rotors would be my recommendation and what I am going to install when I have the money.

If you are at all mechanically inclined and/or can follow instruction in a repair such as RAVE you should be able to accomplish most everything on the 60K service list.

I know you guys are right about saving money by putting in a little elbow grease, but I want to make sure it is done right so I will be handing off to the shop.
