Rover has some weird ideas about changing oil that are designed to keep the pump from running dry when restarting. Most have found that the easiest way to change the oil is to drain the oil, then drop the filter, fill the new filter up with fresh oil and reinstall it, then fill the crank case.
For what it is worth, Rovers have oil pressure problems so in the future stay away from 10/30W oils, go towards 20/50W except if you live in the snow country during the winters then go to 10/40W. Synthetics are great, but done use then if you are just wanting to prolong your oil changes cause Rover engines run very rich and no mater what oil you use, it is full of fuel at 3000 miles. Also, use K&N 3001 oil filters in the futures, they are much larger and have a good quality filter media. One last thought, every 10,000 miles, use a can of engine flush to keep the sludge build up to a minium.
Good luck,
Mike

I can't say the K&N filter is cheaper at about $12 but their quality is as good if not better with a much larger capacity. The 10/30 won't hurt anything. How often are you changing your oil?
I just did my oil chamge a couple of days ago, used 6 qt.s of Castrols 20/50W blend, which is a partial synthetic, and a pint of Lucas's engine oil supplement. It will varie a little based on the filter you use.
Take care,
Mike

Who ever you are make sure you listen carefully to these guys about your oil changes. I just ran into a problem with my 97 and almost lost the engine because I didn't listen to what others were saying. For some reason unknown to many, Rovers engines are very tempermental about oil, and using the right oil is the only way to go. 20w/50 is the right blend, and really take the time to use the right oild filter too, although bigger is not always better, it is how much you really want to spend, and if you have a rover the cost of maintaining it will be a little higher, going the cheap way can cost you in the end.

I was told just yesterday after I had done my finial flushing, that if I used 20w/50 it would distroy my engine, however after looking into the matter and reading a lot of post in here, I found out that this wasn't true, the guy at the parts store had no clue to what he was talking about, and in most cases here in the states not many parts people do know anything about Land Rovers, all they do know is that parts cost a lot of money, and they will sell you the cheapest stuff they can if you don't know ask here first, because I am telling you right here and now, if you want your Rover to last knowing people who own them, and know about them will prolong your Rovers life.

You paid good money for your Rover, don't you think you owe it the good treatment? you get what you paid for, and if you pay for cheap oil and filter you can bet that some where down the road all the money you think you are saving will end up being spent on more repairs just because you wanted to save a buck or two. By the way, I am not yelling at anyone here, I just want everyone to know that this forum as already done a great job for me, and I have found the answers I have been looking for, and no one has ever steered me wrong yet.

Especially with Rovers, don't just ask any buddy a technical question, make sure they have lots of Rover back ground. I agree 100% on the above message.
I have been a service manager and service writer for nearly 30 years and Rovers are Englands way of getting back at us. Don't get me wrong, they are the best 4X4 out there, but they are strange critters too.
All that being said, if you have a question ask us or any other Rover forum for feed back.
Mike
