Question 01 Disco II Broken Engine Cooling Fan

OK... I'm now on my THIRD fan!!! I replaced the OEM fan 25,000 miles ago when I did the HG replacement with the fan from AB. A couple of months ago I noticed that the fan was "wobbly" and I pulled it off and found that the metal around the bolts was broken, so I put big washers around the cracks/breaks and ordered a new one. It is a couple months later and now the new fan is doing the same thing!!! So my question is: Is there a problem that is causing too much stress on the fan or are the replacement fans from AB just junk?

Bill

Hi,

I'm not sure if you have a fan clutch, but I would check the mount of the fan (if it is a fan clutch or any other kind of bearing) - verify that it works correctly and not "throwing" to one side or another which might cause the fan to work wrong as well.

I'd say there's zero chance you got three defective fans.

So, it's either the clutch or the water pump. I'd replace all and be done with it.

x2 it's either the clutch or the water pump.

also check your motor mounts a bad mount will throw the fan into the fan shrowd when the motor raises

The WP, when it starts to wobble, is eating aluminum inside due to tight spaces. At 151K, the fan clutch and WP have made millions spins around the dance floor. Old tired pump keeps getting these new dance partners, and he just can't keep up.

I replaced the WP when I did the HG job, but not the fan clutch. I bet that's the culprit. Time for fan #4 this time with a new clutch! Thanks guys!

To further the discussion, I noticed my indie has an '04 fan on his '00 disco...He says its a better made fan and cools better (without the circular ring) My question is this: Is he right AND/OR is there an aftermarket bolt-on fan that would be a better option as well? (possibly the ones in the "performance sectionsof auto part stores) THANKS!

the down side to using a 03/04 fan is the clutch and fan are one unit, so you will always be replacing the fan and clutch you will have no choice. it also cuts down the possibility of fixing it on the road with standard parts, such as a GM clutch.

I'm using the ringed fan from an old RR with a clutch from AutoZone on my 04. Seems fine after 4k miles.
