Was the worst experience of my driving career.

Id also advise a trans flush, sounds silly but my old fluid increased heat in the truck a fair amount so I stopped along the way and had that done. Instantly calmed the truck down temp wise.

I have since swapped the rad for aluminum, I have a 90s range rad fan I scored new for 10 bucks (no ring on the fan blades for wobble), water pump, and 180F thermostat. Plan to bypass the heater core to keep heat out of the cabin this summer with a flow through design. Ive also got a custom water cooling sprayer of my own design parts on the way as a special project and some special cooling mods on my list this month for another long trip coming up.

My personal advice is stay out of mid day heat, mind your traffic congestion, and +1 on Ultra Gauge. My temp on the dash is dead, the Ultra is worth its weight in gold and not expensive. Its a code reader and instant readout all in one for custom gauges.
How did the RR radiator fan swap in? Is this a better fan than stock? I just replaced the motor on mine that was seized from one at NAPA. I dont think its nearly as good as stock. (fewer CFM) THANKS!

DOUBLE YES on the jack check...mine leaked fluid all over the damn place at the worst possible time and didn't lift the truck- filled it w/ motor oil in a pinch and wedged a log under the truck JIC...tried to make a repair on it when i got home, then I saw a better jack on a Northern Tool catalog for mere pennies. Swapped that thing right out! Don't trust your stock lug wrench- Get a Craftsman 27mm HD one with a large breaker bar

Good Luck pal!

I love the RR one, junkyard had it on a blown RR who apparently put it on too late and it was new. The flex from the heat and the plastic ring on the stock LR fan makes it wobble and destroys the bearing in the water pump faster. My water pump was terrible so I did the pump and refused to put the fan back on. Ordered another fan, same wobble, then I got the threading measurement on the stock one and literally walked around the junk yard looking for others from any brand and well this one fit the bill.

its basically an exact replacement minus the ring. Clears my shroud with a few mm clearance. No wobble, each fin moves independently with expansion, hence why a lot of manf. don't do that stupid ring on rad fans. Think about it, it warps a little and its like a bent bicycle tire, wobbling.

I recommend heavily

Hey everyone, wanted to update this for anyone looking in the future. We had a major issue today when she was on the road and I was about a 1,000 miles away. From the sounds and looks of its the water pump went out. She was 191 miles way from Yellowstone (her new job) and we had AAA with one 200 mile tow. So we got it towed to her work for now until I figure out to do next.

Here is what I did do get ready for the road trip:
--Started with a brake kit from Land Rover Parts & Rover Accessories From Atlantic British | Discovery, Range Rover, LR3, LR2, Defender, Freelander and Land Rover Series Parts & Accessories. All new rotors, pads, bolts, and new oil.
--Replaced the shuttle valve switch, had the wonderful 3 amigos lights one. Problem fixed!
--Wheel alignment, balance & rotation, greased the drive shaft.
--Replaced both rear oxygen sensor, had a check engine light on. (I did the front with the sensor crankshaft last year). Problem fixed!
--trans service, oil change, new air filter, spark plugs, belt, cleaned the mass air flow sensor
--180 stat, new hoses, new radiator, new peak coolant.

Spent a ton of $ money with lots of my labor and still had a major issue.

I guess I'm going to ask, what makes you think the water pump just "went out". If it did I assume you blew a rad or head gasket or something? A bad pulley could in general be a worse issue than a blown pump with similar results.

also, when you did the t-stat, hoses, and rad, why you would skip the water pump? Its in the middle of everything you replaced, seems like a clean sweep for a relatively cheap part of typical 60k service would have been in order. Swapping mine took 30 mins when I did the same work you did basically.

Just curious I guess. In any case sorry you got stranded, its not fun. I joined that club before with the crank sensor.

I was the only one that mentioned AAA towing.

Glad it worked out.

I would also grease the drive shafts no matter what if you are planning more driving.

Always carry 50/50 mix of antifreeze.
You never know when you will need it.

And a hack saw to cut off the end of a hose.
And a few hose clamps.

I did a new water pump 3 years about 15,000 miles ago (its not my daily driver). I thought it would have lasted longer. The fan is very loose, the belt came off, and all the coolant is coming out of the bearing, from what I have been told and saw of face-time. Thanks for all your help guys! I am working on finding a local guy to fix it.

Just a quick note, if your bearing was that bad and vibrations were that bad like mine was (ruined my pump too) you may way to just get a 90s Range rover fan without the ring around the blades. I tried 2 fans after my initial new install and they had pretty noticeable imbalances. The RR one I got at a junk yard that was new runs smooth and fits well with no ring. No modification needed.

Hopefully it lasts longer this time, 15k was wayyyy too short
