01 discovery oil light on after timing cover gasket change

Default 01 discovery oil light on after timing cover gasket change

01 discovery with 120,000 miles.
So I just changed the timing cover gasket, waterpump, crank seal, oil pan gasket. After 30 miles on it, hot and at a idle I get the oil light on. Not flashing and no knocking. I did not change the timing chain or oil pump. Any ideas. What to do?
HELP ME!

Did you take a look at the oil pump gears while you had the timing cover off? And did you replace the oil pickup o-ring?
First thing I'd do is put a mechanical gauge on it and check the cold and hot psi at idle and at 2000rpm. That should help you decide what's next.

Oil pressure switches are known to go bad sometimes.

Ditto with putting a mechanical pressure gauge on it -- otherwise you really don't know what the oil pressure is.

Same thing happened to mine and I put a new oil pump in. Very frustrating, mine only comes on after about 10 miles of driving and only when I stop at the red lights.

You may be experiencing a walked cam bearing. This happened to me and a few other people. I just finished repairing mine a couple of weeks ago. It is a major job, but is doable. Do a search for walked cam bearing to find out more information and how to diagnose it (you can see it from the bottom of the engine with your oil pan off).

Ijon, did the oil pump get installed then the light come on or did you install the oil pump to fix the problem?

No -- The light came on briefly at hot idle. That led me to replace the oil pump gears (which were cracked). After that repair, the oil pressure light still came on at hot idle -- which led me to dig deeper and then I found the walked cam bearing.
