03 - 04 MAF Part Id
My MAF is dead. Searching parts geek came across three Bosch units. All three show different "part numbers". Which is the actual correct one?
Are these unique inventory part numbers to Parts Geek?

This is just totally unnecessary and completely confusing. this doesn't help anybody as the 4.0 and 4.6 MAF sensors are not interchangeable due to the obvious "diff size housings" that you so casually pointed out. They are NOT the same sensor, that is wrong. The 4.6 is calibrated for a different volumetric reading. I know this for a fact because Turner Eng or Tornado systems suggests "upgrading" to the 4.6 MAF sensor after one of their ECU remaps so that the engine can flow more air.

Oh FYI you can remove the actual MAF sensor from the housing Chubbs! Go take a look under your hood!
Also you mention changing the sensor to the "4.6L" sensor. I sure hope you mean the entire thing including the "housing" as you WILL NOT flow more air with a 4.6L (supposedly different MAF) in a 4.0L MAF housing as the 4.0L housing is slightly smaller.
You would need a new airbox lid, 4.6L MAF housing, and the 4.6L intake tube. I quickly pulled P/N's from several of my sources and the bare sensor itself (unscrews from the housing with two security headed screws) has the same P/N for the MAF.

The 4.0 Litre Discovery actually had a smaller Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter fitted than the later 4.6 version, or indeed the 4.0 and 4.6 P38 Range Rovers. In my humble opinion, it was a pretty blatant attempt to limit the power output of the Discovery when compared to the 4.0 Litre P38 Range Rover. Coupled with the lean fuelling and retarded ignition mapping, it was a very effective method of hobbling the Discovery to suit marketing needs.
Tornado Systems specialises in engine management technology, with a particular focus on the Rover V8 engine in the many vehicles that it has powered. This covers all the fuel injection and engine management systems that have been used with this engine, manufactured by either Lucas or Bosch.

OR..they were all pre-2003 V8s that you have snatched the sensors from. Anything after that, and stock/OEM, will be different.

There it is again. This guy is worried about part numbers and here you are suggesting different boxes, lids, housings. nobody is removing security screws and disassembling sensors. you are getting WAY ahead of the OP. its not helping anybody

No in fact they were 03-04's.
That statement you copy & pasted is not clear at all or very specific IMHO. I never owned a D1 4.0L at the same time I had a P38 with a 4.6L, but I do remember earlier LR's having different ratings on their MAF's on GEMS & earlier LR's.
I just went out to my un-touched 03 4.6L D2 parts truck (I haven't touched the MAF). Pulled the darn MAF Sensor itself and IT IS the same darn part # as the MAF in my un-touched 02 Kalahari with a 4.0L. Both MAF's read F-00C-2G2-029 with a 3A rating on one side with PBT-GF30 on the other side. Sorry the actual MAF's on a Bosch 4.0/4.6L are the same just like I said they were earlier.
Just for kicks n giggles I put the 03 MAF into my 99 D2 and the 99's into the 03 D2 and they run exactly the darn same........ Trust me if either one was wrong neither D2 would have idled correctly.

Why in the world would you spend 20.00-30.00 more just for the complete unit??? Also most of the complete units are refurbished vs just the sensor by itself which is a new part vs refurbished. The two security bit screws are a joke... Use a small flat head screw driver bit and they come out quick and easy making a MAF Sensor swap as easy as unplug, unscrew, replace, screw it back in, and plug it back in.
You are the confused one sorry. You are saying the MAF on a 4.6L is indeed a special part due to it being a 4.6L. The housing itself is special as I mentioned on my very first post to this thread, however the actual sensor itself (which you can buy separately IS NOT).
That info you posted is so vague it's truly funny. GEMS/BOSCH are totally different setups. The info you pasted seems to be referring to a GEMS setup.
The 4.6L DOES NOT suck in so much air that it requires a completely different MAF sensor vs a 4.0L. The intake tube, airbox lid, and MAF housings are slightly larger, but lots of people have gotten tired of the 4.6L air boxes cracking, and have installed 4.0L airbox lids, intake tube, and maf housings onto a 4.6L and suffered zero performance issues or CEL's due to the fact.
Online retailers offer you a choice of a complete MAF with a housing or just the MAF itself. If you want to save $$$ get just the bare MAF sensor as it's the same darn thing be it a 4.0 or a 4.6L. If for some reason your tabs are broken on your 4.0 or 4.6L then by all means get the entire thing which is 4.0 or 4.6L specific.
Honestly all of that so called performance info is a joke. I don't care what you slap on a LR it's not going to give you massive performance increases. No "special" MAF in the world is going to make a bit of difference if you still have your OEM throttle body!!!! It would be like connecting a shopvac up to a straw. The 4.0/4.6L throttle bodies are the same as are the actual MAF sensors.
When I used to have a Jeep there were so many "heated" debates about performance on the 4.0L I6 engine with people slapping on large Cold Air Intakes, Throttle Body Spacers, different injectors, E3 Spark Plugs, and yada yada yada. Not a single one of those people that tossed $$$$ into their 4.0L I6's did anything to the actual throttle body or the exhaust for that matter. So actually all they did was make their intakes whistle, and their wallets smaller. Same theory goes for LR's!

Don't screw around with non Bosch MAF's, they never work for long.
