Default 03 Disco 2 Stalling

I just got a 2003 Discovery SE. Once I got it, it seemed to be driving fine with the exception on the highway I notice it down shifted kind of hard going up hills. It then stalled on me and smelled a little hot and would then crank but not start. After It could down it would start back up but then after about 20 minutes it stalled on me again. towed it back home and now the check engine light came on, I got it scanned and it threw back the codes P1884 and P0327. If anyone could give me a little insight to this situation I would greatly appreciate it.

327 is for a failing #1 knock sensor, don't worry about the 1884.
The knock sensor will not kill the engine, so my money is on 2 problems, a knock sensor and a crank sensor that won't always throw a code.

I have new sensors on order, the only thing that stumps me if its a faulty crank sensor is that it will start back up if you let it cool down. I drove it for for about 15 minutes last night just around my town and it stalled again. Again it smelt a little hot, the temp gauge red just slightly over half way. Check engine light isn't on, I let it cool for about another 15-20 minutes and then it started right back up.

If you have this happen, you can check for spark (spare plug on wire you pull off). No spark would be CKP sensor. Knock sensor controls a timing shift, but does not kill spark, like Mike says. You can also pour cold water on the sensor to cool down sooner. When replacing, plug in sensor and let it hang, put every nut and space back exactly right. See attached.

That is one think the crank sensor will do quite often is kill the engine when hot but allow it to restart when the engine/crank sensor cools off.

agreed, cool will start warm to hot dies, changed out the cps and problem solved...also that is about the right mileage for a cps to fail..
