I dont know if you used ramps or not, but once you park the trk to where you are going to do the oil change, pop the hood and let it cool while you gather your tools. Also if you buy a box of Nytrile Gloves you will keep your hands clean.
Oh yeah, stay to the side when you pull the drain plug, you dont want to be right under the oil pan.
But good job on your first DIY oil change. Makes you feel good doesnt it? And now that you know how to do it and the cost benifit of it you can swtich to full synthetic motor oil and do one even better for your trk. As well as improve your MPG.

 

"Change it hot and change it often". Don't wait for it to get too cool. The warmer it is, the more sludge and crap you are likely to get out. You usually only have to burn your arm on the exhaust once or twice before you start avoiding it without thinking.

I put the SS365 on my oil filter and the 180 on my transmission pan. When I change my fluids I will check to see how much metal it has accumulated.

 

Those filter magnets are a scam, they did it on Mythbusters and it was "BUSTED".

 

The metal particles trapped in my oil filter are proof enough for me. Anecdotal evidence does not do much for me either. Do you have a link or some other source of information?

I've always heard to change it hot also, but it will pour out of there in a hurry, so those last couple of threads on the drain plug are critical. The exhaust pipe is a pain also. All in all, it's not a bad job on the Disco since there is plenty of ground clearance. I accumulate my used oil in big jugs and take it and the filters to the county landfill where they have a used oil recycling program, I recycle the oil bottles and even the cardboard filter box. A lot of places have started charging you to take your used oil, which really stinks, but the county doesn't.
