Default 03 Discovery Coolant and Oil Leaks

Good Day Fellow Rover Owners!

2003 Discovery 121,000 miles. New Top Heater Hose, 180 T-Stat, Heater Plate Kit, and all other hoses not new but in excellent condition.

I have two problems an oil leak and coolant leak.

The first and most severe problem the coolant leak. I've been noticing over the past two or three weeks that I have been having to top off the coolant (I check my levels on this car daily before first start). Knowing that coolant just doesn't disappear, I suspected that I had a leak somewhere. I couldn't visually find it until today. After crawling under the rig to get a closer look at an oil leak i've been having I noticed that the drip coming from the Front Prop area looked more like coolant than the standard A/C drip which also comes from that region of the truck. Come to find out it's definitely coolant leaking above the front of the Prop Shaft down onto it and then to the ground. It is a slow leak.

My question is have you all had a leak like this? Is there a known issue in this area of the truck? What would be leaking there? Is this my fear of the beginning of a HG problem? Please see pics below.

Second issue the oil leak. Oil slowly drips off the Oil Filter onto the ground. Seems to be coming from above the oil filter housing. I'm not sure if its the housing (which appears to have or should have a gasket above it) or is it coming from the bolt above the housing.

Again, I'm looking to see if anyone else has had problems like these and the standard operating procedure to diagnose and or repair these problems. I hope i've provided enough information and the two pictures I provided are enough to be pointed in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for all of your assitance!

Trace the coolant leak, usually is trail and you can follow it, however, been that is not too many coolant hoses back there I would say one of two things. Head gasket or some component of the heating assembly. Hoses that feeds and return to heater core located in the firewall, can't miss it check the connections. Last thing, do a cooling system pressure test. You can borrow from Auto Zone free.
About your oil leak? use some degreaser and wash it as clean as you can and keep an eye on it, you will see within a day a wet oil spot. Hope this help..

do a cooling system pressure test.

Question for the two previous replies (and truly not being a Smart **** here) but what would a Coolant Pressure test prove at this point? I have confirmed that it's coolant that is leaking. It's coming from the back of the motor and the hoses leading and returning from the heater core are dry and in good shape. Right now the leak is coming off of where the motor and tranny meet. I will do a pressure test if necessary but I have a sneaking suspicion that it will tell me what I already know...your pressure is low and the system is leaking!

I guess what I'm looking for is in this area of the motor could it be anything other than the HG.

If you do a coolant pressure test at least you can try and find the leak with the system pressurized but without the engine running. That kind of helps if you're having the climb around the engine bay. You could also add some UV dye to the coolant and see what on the top side glows.

I would think if its dripping that far back it's probably the HG. I've seen my throttle body heater leak and run back toward the rear, but it wasn't making it that far back.

Ah! I totally understand the logic of that now. Thank you for the explanation. I will give it a try.

If it's dripping on the front prop shaft it's highly unlikely that it is the throttle body heater. Impossible, really. It could be from one of the lines running either to or from the heater core for the cabin, but as much as I hate to be one of those "Oh my God it's the headgaskets" guys that's really the only other reasonably probable source on that side of the engine. The throttle body heater is on the other side of the engine and would run down the top of the left-hand side valve cover and drip off the back. Your prop shaft is on the right-hand side.
