Default 03 Discovery Rough riding on dirt road?

Well this is something... yesterday they put notice at my place they will be bulldozing our asphalt street up to lay new drainage lines.. well it is defiantly drivable but a bunch of rough asphalt crushed up and like an old dirt road... well we have a few mini coopers and ford 2 seater mini thing and they are just zipping up and down the road.. and I sit here in my sweet off road discomonster and I swear its the most bouncy rough ride i could imaging but they are just zipping up and down the street while Im doing everything I can to stay IN my seat... what in the heck could be going on? lol i have lately been having some noises like clomp clop clop clop when i drive over small bumps here and there and even at slow speed when I come up to a speed bump its like almost hitting it without andy shocks... but I can easily step out of disco and push it side to side so I know the springs are working... im of course considering anty sway bushings and the sway bars link boots all look good.. the 2 bushings up front are easy enough to quickly replace but they didnt look that bad... as for springs... I do not have any sagging and all wheel centers to fender sit around 18" which I believe is normal for springs... shocks are not oily but im not ruling out a new for replacement for them... any pointers?

Those cars probably have independant suspension so they will have a nicer ride over a solid axle set up.

yeah , i was just hoping my landy would have been smoother.... lol i have to hold on tight just pulling into driveway lol my niece had an 04 disco and it seemed to have a softer ride too.. mine is pretty firm... i dont think anyone put stiffer springs on it hoping for steel bumpers but who knows lol ive hesitated on replacing all that because I do want steel bumpers but the cost is very prohibitive wen also adding springs and shocks and bushings and And AND!

Sidewall and air pressure can make the most dramatic difference in ride

hmm maybe for this road Ill need to deflate! lol I check them often and tires are pretty new.. Dynapro's im wondering if my shocks could be contributing ...

Are your tires an E rated load? You should take a couple of lbs out if they are. The other thing to think about is how much load are those little cars capable of? Their spring rates are much softer than a big heavy Land Rover. If you put one of those small cars in your rover, it would ride a lot better. Like others have said, the solid axle thing doesn't help either. That's why 99% of all SUVs are now IFS at the very least. Most are fully independent, which makes for a good ride, but not so good for wheeling or carrying loads.

If you have to slow down for normal things like speed bumps that is a sign your springs are toast. Can you tell if they are original or aftermarket? How many miles on the truck? They could be the originals. And I think 18" is on the low side. Putting new shocks on worn out springs is not a good idea either.

I knew I needed new springs when potholes and speed bumps made me slow down, hold on and cringe. If you are on a budget I would get regular replacements (not heavy duty) Lucky 8 has the Britpart original replacement springs which I've heard are a good product and affordable.

Maybe it is my shocks and springs... it hits speed bumps hard.. it has 125k on miles and i just replaced my ball joints thinking that was the issue and they were bad... i read someplace years ago 18" was a good sign springs were good but its possible i remember wrong and 18 is not good lol im pretty sure its all original springs and shocks...... !

This is likely one of the best bits of advice possible, but so often ignored... low speed off road work and modified tire pressures can transform the ride off road.

i placed order for new set of Med All-terrain Terrafirma shocks n springs! and some new wheel bearings! going to be a fun day installing! Should give me a few inches lift ! today driving around I really paid attention to springs and shocks and road bump and my original shocks n springs really felt like they were just bottomed out... defiantly gone... at least thats what IM telling myself so I can add the nice upgrade! lol
