'03 Discovery ticking noise
Hi all, I have an 03 discovery that recently started to make a 'ticking' noise. I opened up the hood and couldnt figure where it was coming from. I got it bout 2 weeks ago and have been putting in nothing but premium gas. It has 76,000 miles on it, it runs smooth but after its been on for a while it makes that ticking noise. Any idea what it can be and how I fix it?
Also the lumbar support on the drivers seat is all the way up which makes it quite uncomfortable. I have tried to decrease it using the buttons but they dont work for that particular setting. If its just filled with air cant i poke a lil hole in it to make it go down, i dont thinki will ever use that feature.

No the lumbar support is not just filled with air. Cant help you there, sorry.
As for the ticking noise, go and have the oil pressure tested ASAP! You may have a failing oil pump, it is very common on 2003's.
Almost any shop can test the oil PSI.
Good luck.

The seat switch should release the high air pressure of the lumbar support.
As for the engine noise, first thing, contact a Rover dealer with your vin and see if you ahev one of the questionable engines. Then consider find a good shop, not a dealer, have them check your oil pressure, cold at idle, cold at 2000 RPMs, warm at idle and warm at 2000 Rpms. This will tell all.

ok so now after doing much more research i understand that some 03 discoverys had a manufactorers defect. heres the link http://home.comcast.net/~bhcmbailey/lrna_tsb.pdfmy vin falls within this group, but how do i know if its been replaced or not and this notice says that i must replace the ENTIRE ENGINE AND THE OIL PUMP. Does anyone know anytihng about this?

The only way to know for a fact if it has been replaced befoer is by calling the dealer and giving them your VIN#.
And yes, the only permneant fix is a new engine. $7,000 for brand new, $3500 for used.
You can replace just the oil pump but it will fail again. That may be what has happened, they replaced the oil pump and then dumped the truck alittle while later.
Maybe that is just needs a engine flush and it is a $15 fix.
Wont know until you have the oil PSI tested and talk to the service manager at the Land Rover dealer.
What really sucks is that you didnt do your research before you bought the truck two weeks ago.
I feel for you man. Dont jump off a bridge yet though.

damn, so im guessing i cant just seafoam it? Also, do u think i can just poke ahole in the rear of the seat to make the lumbar support subside, cuz I can feel the support on the back of the seat.
thanx again!

I think I am going to have to add that post to my list of really lame ideas.
So instead of doing what I suggested, checking your vin with the dealer and possible tests, you want to wait till someone gives you some better news.
There is nothing to be waiting for, you need to go out and do your homework.

RE: '03 Discovery ticking noise
ya, theres really no other way. the dealer said they have recorded maintanence up tp 56k with no engine assembly replacement. It currently has 76k so it is possible it could have been replaced but im really doubting it. where is the oil pump located in the engine bay? As for the seat, am i gonna have to get another one just to fix the lumbar support? everyother control works except for the lumbar support.
thanx again
