Default 03 discovery transmission maybe gone

So my 03 has 238,000 miles and it seems like the “D” gearing may be shot. I dropped it into 3rd and it sounded fine and got me the few miles home.
what do most people do to take care if blown transmission assuming that’s what it is?

If I fix it it’s going to my nephew as it still runs great and I have a new truck, so yeah I’m hoping not to spend $4k lol

thanks!

HP24's are like 400.00 all day long for good working units.

^ What he said, get the vehicle up on stands at a comfortable height, the transmission isn't terribly heavy, you could do it solo or with a buddy. I haven't yet had one out but since I've been under there a fair bit having my engine out, it doesn't look too bad. I'm sure there's tons of write-ups. I've yet to come across a transmission I couldn't swap out in half a Saturday if I read up first on what it entails.

Sounds like he hasn't even started troubleshooting yet, a little early to be removing the transmission. Things like checking the fluid and the XYZ would be first on the list.

I had an 02 Westminster D2 with an HP22 that would not start off in D, but if you shifted it manually from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and up into D it was fine. I sold it to a guy for cheap & he fixed it over a weekend. I think he pulled an HP24 from a local junk yard for cheap, but that 02 is still cruising around!

Thanks for the reply’s... I’m currently on a road trip and won’t be back for a while to check it out... plus I’m disabled so I won’t be doing the work myself. So it sounds like it can be done fairly inexpensively.
it will be interesting to see what the issue is when I get back. I could smell it cooking a bit and it was a bit crunchy. Both of which stopped when I shifted to 3rd
