So on my third steering box. The good news is that I am getting good at replacing them. The reservoir will drain overnight at the bottom of the box. Rven with out pressure.
Does anyone have a good one that does not leak? Or do I just need to buya new one?
Thanks

Reason: Typo
hey....you're the guy who sent me one last year ....right?
I put seals in that one and cleaned it up. It tooks me a few days to do it, clean it up, etc...not too difficult. the ONLY thing
I would not change are the 3 teflon seals on the center shaft worm gear. unless they are damaged, leave them alone.
no leaks so far! The hardest part was getting the pitman arm off the sector shaft. after that it was just removing a bunch of 1/2" bolts and cracking the case open.
Brittaniarestorations on youtube has a bunch of videos outling the disassembly, cleaning & inspection and installing the seals.
I could not find an OEM Land Rover seal kit...I think they are no longer available anywhere. I contacted the german company who made them and they said
NLA.
I found the kits offered online are substandard at best... If I was still in florida I would send you the assortment of kit that I put together for doing the job but
I'm back in Canuckistan til Nov.
It looks like I may have a leak at the output shaft. Its a bit wet. But I think I am getting a leak at the two holes below, the fluid drips at the pair of holes, drips on to the pittman arm and on to the steering link. Just poured a few ounces into the reservoir and within 30 min it leaks out, with no pressure on the system.
Given I likely have two leaks, the pair of holes and the output shaft seal, maybe just need a new steering box.
Is that possible, do those holes go through the body of the steering box?

IIRC, on the box you sent me there is piece that goes over the end of that cap. The end of that piece of metal has 2 clip ends that fit into those holes to lock it into place.
The piece of metal at the end is used to secure the cap in place. Some boxes have it, some do not.
Here is the pic of the box you sent me disassembled:
Note the fork shaped piece in the mid/right portion of the pic
The cap that goes into the bore *SHOULD* have an o-ring on it. Perhaps that o-ring has failed. and yes, those 2 holes in the case go right thru the bore.
again, going by memory, the cap when pushed into the bore should be further in than those 2 holes. that fork piece keeps downward pressure to keep it
from backing out. Note that there are 2 styles of cases...one that has the hydraulic line going into the side of the case and one (like the one you gave me)
that goes into the bottom cap. the fork piece larger ends fit onto that hose to keep it securely in place.
if the snap ring is in the groove properly, it's possible the open end of the ring is next to those 2 holes. IIRC, you are supposed to push the snap ring around in the groove
using a punch so the solid part is covering them up.
