I am betting the leak is bc the ring is gone and thus it is no longer sealing at all. Im going to pull it out and look to see if there is play. I never took mine apart and it worked great until one day it dumped the fluid. I had replaced nearly the entire PS system, so i enjoyed the short lived, no leaking disco experience. It seems like there are new ones for $250 or so. I may do that rather than spend a few hours and potentially mess up something on re-assembly. Appreciate all the insights. I watched several of the videos on re-assembly of these. was helpful see what is going on inside of these.

Just got it pulled out this week. been sorting a busted brake line too. Got it apart tonight.

On my power steering box, i appear to be missing the two gaskets that are deep of the metal disc. According to the diagram below, i only have the one gasket that goes around the metal disc. Below is what i have once it is apart. No additional pieces. If that is my cause of the leak, why did it work for about a year before leaking? I am thinking I will try to repair it rather than buy a new one. I have pretty good evidence of the source of the leak and seems it should go back together ok.

I had about 2mm of play in the disc before I took it apart, i could push it in and out about 2mm, even with the retaining ring in place.

did you find the snap ring? On the box you sent me, there was a single square cut black sealing ring that went on the groove on the outer cover and a white teflon sealing ring
on the piston. that was all I saw when I took it apart. there was no play on either the cap or the piston when inserted into the bore.

I did have the snap ring in there, just did not see it. I did order a couple from china that looked like they would fit but they were too thin of a gauge. so no alternative. regardless I am missing the white teflon ring and the black sealing ring you mention. weird it took so long to leak, and where did they go? What i have in the photos is literally everything.

whoever did the install/reman on it messed up I would guess. nothing surprises me anymore.

the outer cap is where the threaded hydraulic line threads into. when hydraulic pressure is applied during steering, fluid flows in thru this fitting to move the
piston in and conversely on the other side when steering is reversed.

did you remove the rack (as shown in the last picture)? You have to thread a bolt into the hole in the center to use as leverage to pull it out. also, you would have to
have removed the main steering shaft to remove it.
