Default 03 w/88000 miles,over heated,HG?

Just had the 03 disco over heat out of nowhere.I dont drive it much and the last time was six days ago. When I would stop I would smell a little antifreeze but thought nothing of it as we have had some very hot days.
Yesterday I drove a short distance (5 Miles) and the coolant was spraying out from under the resivour between a small hose and the nipple it attaches to.THE TEMP GAGE NEVER REGISTERED THAT THE ENGINE WAS HOT! WTF! The engine started to rough idle, that is what gave it away. I let it cool and put water in the resivour,it pulled it all in.I started it and let it warm up again with the lid off and it boiled out the top of the resivour in no time.
I have gotten another water pump and have a temp sensor and thermostat on order I am wondering if will need HG's as well. My machanic is on a road trip and will not be back for several weeks,Im doing the work at hand myself but would get him to do the HG if its nessisary.
I wont even start about the check engine light(Incorrct purge flow) and the Three amigos that stay on all the time.
And all this in my first post.

WELCOME! And Yeesh!...Not sure where to start....

First, you need to locate and correct your leaks.

Check and replace hoses and clamps as needed. Sounds like you lost all of your coolant due to failed clamp or hose. The factory clamps are known to fail as they age, so replace all that you can find with a worm drive/fuel injector style clamp to help prevent a re-do.

Once you get the system buttoned up, get a cooling system pressure test to see if you have sprung any additional leaks (including the HG). Once that's done, you can determine what else needs to be done.

FYI - not a good idea to let a vehicle run (especially hot) with the cap off of the coolant reservoir

P.S. - I just had an overheat issue this weekend so I feel your pain.

I would say that you might have caught it in time. Since coolant was leaking heavily out the bad connection, the temp sensor may not have registered much of a change. The faint smells from the minor leaks were a lead up to the rupture. Do the updates you have, and see if the vehicle with a full coolant system will idle when warmed up for 15 minutes without overheating. A scanner can tell you more details, like coolant temp going past reasonable numbers. Before you jump on HGs, seems like a little more testing might be in order.

Perform a cooling system prssure test and a compression test. If both are good, bleed the system properly and you should be good to go.

Replaced the thermostat and pulled the water pump. The water pump is fine so I placed it back on. Filled the coolant back up and started ,same problem as before. The coolant system has exuast gas leaking in causing the coolant to be blown back into the resivour forcing it out through what availible point to leak. The spray is under emence pressure. I took the water pump back tp Orielly' and got credited and ordered a head gasket kit. My mechanic will be back from Vegas on the 5th and start the job.THERE ARE NO LEAKS COMING FROM ANY COOLANT HOSES. The lost coolant is being blown out the exaust and at the small hose and fitting at the resivour. This is not the standard head gaket symptoms everyone assumes, there is no water in the oil. head gaskets go out many different ways. The reason I know this to be the head gasket is my son has a 89 Comanche that did the same thing last month with the same symptoms and only the replacement of the head gasket stopped it. Ill let you know how things turn out and how much the whole thing cost me.

On different note, does anyone know of someone in central NC that can read LR codes and not cost an arm or leg, everyone in my area has Global units which dont tell you crap about LR exact problems,ARG!

So, I might suggest you quit missing with it, send me your number and I'll walk you thru what you need to do. In the mean time quit driving it unless you want to toast that block.

Ok found it.

Dale Gregory in Hunterville. Auto Works Unlimited.
Contact Info: 704 875 2929

I haven't had any work done by him but I've searched various land rover forums and they all say good things about this guy.

Went to inspect the resivour leak and without any reasonable force the nipple broke off the resivour, oops, need a new resivour now.Good thing is I believe so far that the slow leak from that point allowed the coolant level to get low enough to allow air into the lines.Mike, thanks for your help so far.I keep you all advised.
