Default 04 Cross Bars Different?

I am thinking of purchasing a set of cross bars for my 04. I am finding a lot of 99-03 specific cross bars, and only found 1 set for the 04, which was more expensive. I am pretty sure that this is because the 04 has thicker roof rails. Anyway, can I use the older style cross bars on my 04?

Nope. At least, not without modification. The 04 cross rails are pretty rare. I'd love a set, myself, but they're not worth the price to me.

I'd imagine you could use aftermarket cross bars from yakima or thule. They wouldn't look the same, but they should get the job done. I've always removed my cross bars when I'm not using them, because they create a lot of wind noise at highway speeds.

I ended up buying the cross rails for the old style roof rails from a junkyard for $25. I attached them with some black hose clamps. I was kind of skeptical at first, but they seem pretty solid. At least solid enough to hold a few skis this winter.

Here are some

I cut out the original locking mechanism so the hose clamp can go through. I also painted the hose clamps but they scratched up a bit after installation.
