Default 04 Steering Issue

So I had an 04 and sold it back in 2015 and have since regretted it bc she was a NICE TRUCK. Found her twin for sale last year and took it even tho the price tag was $200 above scrap price and AS IS.

Well this thing has all sorts of problems lol. The most prominent being the steering and some limp mode w two green flashing lights I’ve never encountered before.

Steering problem first: With the steering wheel centered. From 12:00 - 9:00 is absolute slop before truck steers at all going L - R either way.

I read a few threads on the topic before posting and am now headed outside to check ps fluid, steering linkage and find the adjuster nut. 😬. Thanks for any help….!!!

Adjuster nut is the solution to that.

And check all of the rod ends and your steering knuckle ball joints...and of course, everything else down there.

My phone doesn’t do anything when I click the link to download the rave manual…? I haven’t had a real computer in 10+ years… Maybe it’s time I set something up.

So I sprayed the heck out of all the joints / knuckles on the steering shaft and also these two nuts in the picture. Which one is the adjuster…? Thanks…!! 😊

#1 (lock nut and hex adjuster). The lock nut has some sealing nylon, as I recall. #2 is the air bleed vent.

Two options on the Rave manual from the Extinct site. One is a download pdf and the other is browser based depending on which you click on. It's been a while since I set it up but I know the Firefox browser worked.

I see the locknut. I even got a 1/2” ratchet and impact socket on it. I got it to move a slight bit in the loosen direction twice but immediately stopped bc of all I’ve read while searching old posts about “less is more” I’m a bit confused tho, as I don’t see a hex adjuster…? Is that the shaft in the center of the locknut…?? Should I get my dremel and make a slot for a big flathead screwdriver to adjust that…??? Thanks…!! 😊

A good idea is to mark the location of the center adjuster, so you can see how much it turns. The lock nut position does not matter, so long as it is tightened up when finished. The center is the adjuster part. Normal is to use an allen key (hex) to fit in there. Maybe need to clean it up first.

Bench adjustment technique involves turning the input shaft while adjusting the hex just until there is no more lash. It is really adjustment by feel. The center hex is screwed up or down to move the roller that contacts the worm gear. The roller should just barely touch the gear, so turning the hex too much is bad. If the roller presses too much on the gear, the steering wheel gets stiff and leads to parts wearing out. If there is a gap between the roller and the gear, then the steering wheel gets floppy. So it might take a few tries before it's just right.
