04 Transfer Case Shifter
I just bought an 04 transfer case shifter for my 01 disco 2. There's an interlock solenoid on the 04 shifter. I should remove this prior to installation, right? I also have an issue with the low range solenoid on the transfer case. It will currently not shift into low. So, since I need to be in that area to do this job I might as well install the linkage to have the locking dif. Any tips for getting access to all the screws for the solenoid cover? It appears to be a real bitch to get them all out.
I never wired anything when I did the CDL shifter from an ‘04 into my ‘00. The light even came on the dash! HA! it’s red for whatever reason in the pre-facelift cluster but whatever.

And unless you are replacing the SLABS, if you leave the CDL engaged and turn the engine off, you’ll get the 2 amigos like you see in the 2nd picture.
I guess where mine differed was that you can see there is no solenoid in from the first pic from my ‘00, so I dunno what to say there.

🙌 had to remove the hi/low cable bracket and sheet metal for the connector mounting to get full access to the fasteners for the solenoid cover. Now to reassemble and trim for the cdl.
I ask this for others. I understand your point that the solenoid in the '04 shifter is more reliable. When I installed an '04 shifter in my '99 DII twelve years ago I removed the solenoid from the '04 shifter. So far, so good.
I'm probably wrong, but all I did was pop out the interlock solenoid from the tc and add rtv to the cover to seal the tc inner workings from the elements. The old solenoid was frozen in place and could not be retracted.
Hopefully I wont regret leaving the solenoid in place on the 04 shifter. It's not too late to convince me to remove it.

Yep all you do is gut the old TC mounted setup and remove the solenoid. Then seal with RTV making sure to apply enough to cover where the wire used to go inside the old solenoid housing.
The old setup will fail and gravity will hold it into place causing you to be stuck in whatever you jad selected before failed. New setup on the linkage is not with gravity (mounted sideways) and since it's external you can bypass it by using a long coat hanger or similar object if it does fail.
