Default 1171 and 1174 codes

I am going to start this topic again since it is so long since the last update. Problem started about 4 months ago. One minute car running normal then started bad missfire. This is a 2001 Disco 2. Limped to the shop and it was diagnosed as a bad set of plugs and leads. These were replaced and some oil seals replaced. THen went on summer vacation. Car running fine but after about 200 miles check engine light comes on. THis then lights and goes out over time of vacation. On returning car returned to shop and the "cleaned the MAF" (I now know!). Light came on again 200 miles later. Since then I have changed out the MAF and replaced front two O2 sensors. Light still comes on with 1171 and 1174 codes. For some reason I have noticed light is on when I have moved forward for a time to fully heat up engine and then I stop and reverse. So any suggestions for next step? The other problem that seemed related was trouble refuelling with air locks forming especially when the light was on.

I know these codes are for lean mixture could it need a simple tuning and making a little richer? Could it be the plugs, they were replaced with NGK? Would a cleaner through the injectors help? She runs absolutely fine but I dont like seeing lights. Would a picture of old o2 sensors help?

Thanks to all as always

David

Time for a new MAF, and this time keep people away from it. Also, make sure you only use a factory ait filter, no K&N type air filter that will kill a Bosch MAF in a heart beat.

As I said MAF has already been changed, mileage around 80,000, no K&N ever used and had no problems with air filter prior to the missfire. It is still clean and as new

So if I read this correctly when the check engine light is on you have a hard time fueling the truck? It shuts the gas pump off to soon?
You have a bad purge valve, it is a valve that removes fuel vapor from the gas tank, collects it and then returns the liquid back to the fuel tank.
It is a hard one to diagnois, your dealer will know exactly what it is and how to fix it, it only happens when it is hot out or on really long trips when the fuel pump gets hot and fuel level is low, hot fuel pump equals more gas vapor.
This has happened before, there are a couyple of posts on it.

Ok this would explain that but would it also cause the 1171 and 1174 error codes or as I said could this be somthing else like the NGK plugs or am I missing something obvious here. It is strange that all this seemed to occur at the same time. Looks like 2 seperate things, what do you think and thank you for the quick response.

The NGK's have nothing to do with it.
What plug wires did you use?

OK to update, I obtained a second opinion from a 2nd shop and it was shown to me that there was an air leak on the inlet manifold. I took car back to original repairers EURO..... Phillips Highway, Jacksonville, FL and was informed that it was not the inlet manifold but a hole in the inlet hose (This I had not noticed before!) I replaced the hose and then again checked using brake cleaner this morning. There is a definate leak at the front of the inlet manifold as shown by white smoke. I will not be going back to the repairers again, they have had 3 chances and failed and were rather unpleasant the last time charging me $104 for a diagnosis and no repair. So the better business bureau will now be informed. but enough of that.

I will be taking off the inlet manifold over xmas so, if your members can kindlyy inform me what I am likely to need to simply remove the manifold reseat it on a new gasket and crank it down. I know the rocker gaskets were replaced at the last inspection and I know Atlantic supply a full kit but most of this should have been replaced already. It will be a case of off, check and replace. And that as they say should be the end of that.

PS my check engine light still comes on probably due to this leak.

Thanks in advance

David

If you are going to pull the upper intake, go a little farther remove the lower and replace the valley pan gaskey and the intake manifold gasket, this will save you a lot of grief down the road.

This problem was finally solved by another local shop. Inlet manifold intake leak. All gaskets replaced and I can now even fill my fuel tank at full speed. Any Disco owners needing a good mechanic in Jacksonville FL, Contact me he is busy though!
