Default 14.8V? Going through headlight bulbs ever 4-6months

Hey guys,

I just had both my headlights(L and R low beam) go out the other day. I put the bulbs in 4 months ago and this is a re-occurring problem, every 4-6 months at least one of my bulbs will go.

I have a voltage gauge that was installed recently and i am getting UP TO 14.8V. Is this too high? do i need to replace a voltage regulator?
It stays between 14.1 and 14.8V.

I have been using SilverStar zXe bulbs...i always get them covered under warranty since they below before 12months but i know it has to be something on my end....

The problem is the SilverStar bulbs. Most of them have a very short life. Switch to Hella H4's in 55w/100w and be done with it. A lot cheaper too. I see you have an 03, don't know if the newer style headlights will accept h4 bulbs, but the work well in 99-02's

I would confirm your charging systems output by having a local parts store do a free charging system test, yes, 14.8 is pushing over the required limit.

Alright I will swing by....i really expected to have a blown fuse or something last night after talking with you...they have never gone out at the same time before but it could have been a day or 2 with just 1 out and i wouldnt have noticed...

I thought 14.8 seemed slightly too high.

Just looked up a voltage regulator...suppose to keep it at 14.5

You are putting them on wearing fresh latex gloves right? any oil, greese, from car, hands. skin or other will blow them out early... was a nearly weekly complaint for any DIY customer putting in those bulbs in the parkinglot when i worked at Advance Auto who didn't use gloves. ive had em in all my cars, ive never had one go out, once

but yea 14.8 is high too!

ps. also always replace all common bulbs on a the line in pairs/quad whatever the number.

New alternator NOW.
You will fry the battery soon.
When the battery fries, it will go open circuit
and then you fry all the ECU's in your truck.

Really, not kidding.
Do NOT cheap out on this.
Get an alternator now.

Its the bulbs, they run hot so they dont last long.
The set I had in my Montero actually melted the wire harness.
