Default 16 inch steel wheel options / sizes.

Hello!

I want to replace my stock 18" rims with 16" steel wheels with all terrain tires. This will be for my 04 Discovery with stock ride height. I am seeing 7" and also 8" wide options for steel wheels. Any recommendations or suggestions / pros and cons between the 2 different widths?

Thanks!

Find out what tire you want first, it will tell you compatible rim widths. In general, 7" = skinny tire, 8" = normal-wide tire

255 65 R16 is the factory size for 16 inch rims on a D2 and is what I am looking at but am interested in suggestions / Pros and cons etc.

For stock height, you don't have a lot of options. Just stick with 255.

I added a lift and switched from 18's to 235/85R16. Using 16x7 rims. Very happy with it.

I ran 265/75R16 BFG KO's on both my 03 D2's back in the day with zero lift. Since they weren't an aggressive tire like a M/T I had no issues at all. Of coarse now I'm sure the OEM springs will have sagged over the years.

I guess it depends on what type of steel wheel/rim you're getting and the off-set. Generally, rule of thumb is, for every inch you go up, you widen the stance of the vehicle the same amount. But, since you are staying at a stock height, either rim should work (7in/8in dia). I've ran my wife's 18's on my 01, which has 16 aluminums and notice no significant difference in the two.

As far as pros and cons go...I'm not exact sure what you're looking for? Steel vs aluminum or 18 vs 16?

If it's the latter, I like 16's...they don't look so soccermom/mallcrawler/whoopie. Only put the 18's on mine, to try and eliminate a vibration issue on my wife's discovery. They were back off within a few days on determining they were not the issue.

If it's the former, I have no experience with steel rims on a discovery.

Good luck, with your decision.

Brian.
