Default 1996 Discovery

Hello people, My name is Steph, I've been driving Jeeps for 20 Years now and have been in love with Discoverys since the first time I ever laid eyes on one back in 1996.

The only thing that ever kept me from getting one, is it's poor reliability reputation and the rarety of the dealerships that have a reputation of requesting an arm and a leg every time you enter their premises. So after the second time you're srewed and tatooed!

Anyways, as I was saying, the poor reliability is mostly what kept me from bying one. But to be honest, it's the look and the prestige of driving a Land Rover I'm mostly interested in. But how prestigeous is it to be stuck on the side of the road.

A friend of mine has a used car dealership and just got a 1996 disco with the leather, dual sunroof, power everything and seven passenger option and 160 000 KMs approx: 100 000 miles and everything looks like new. It's his third one and he's the only person ever to tell me good things about Land Rover Discoverys.

Even ex-discovery owners who only had good things to say about them, admitted to me when they got rid of them that they were just a mountain of problems.

Things like: the dual sunroofs kept leaking,That thing consumed more gas than my Viper, the electricals kept failing, that vehicle was not built for Canadian winters,etc....

So what is it really like????? Could it be that those guys coincidently got lemons? Is there a year that should have less problems. I figure that the more complicated the system is, the more prone to complicated breakage it becomes.

What do you all think really...

Thank you all in advance for your replies and hopefully I will be part of this forum as an owner soon.

Steph

Every car has it's problems. Land Rovers cost more to repair, and have a differnt aproach to being built. If it is properly maintained it will treat you well, 100,000 miles is a lot on any car, be prepared to repair, or put some cash into any car with 100K on it unless it has been taken care of really well. Going from a jeep to a LR you will notice a big differance in it capabilities. Yea gas milage can be a problem for some people, I get 15mpg's but mine is also lifted, larger tires, and a few engine mods. Its a 98 D1.
