Default "New" 1996 Discovery I

I'm considering buying a "96 Discovery I with manual transmission with 102,000 miles on it. The car is in GREAT shape except is has a whine fron the transmission, ect in 4th,5th gear. It is most obvious when appling power, and goes away when coasting. The car has a couple other minor issues, but this is by far the most glaring. I'm taking it in to my mechanic tomorrow to have it checked out. I really want this car... However, I don't want to get in over my head before I even get a chance to make it through the winter !!!I need a reliable car, and will make repair before I get stranded, ect !!! I appreciate any info on things I should look for before purchase... Thanks in advance !!!

i have a 95 disco and love it, but it was a one owner dealer maintained vehicle. i have a fair working knowledge about cars and have freinds in the car repair feilds, if you can turn a wrench and don't mind checking these vehicles regularly and meticulously then i'd say... no get one that doesn't have a tranny problem these trucks are tough enough to deal with. don't start with a problem, and that's any truck.

You won't get an exact estimate for rebuilding the tranny untill you actually open it up and it will be a little expensive but worth it in the long run, they are a great truck.
