1998 LR Discovery purchase question
Getting money is not a prob. I will pay cash. But I really only have 6K to spend max. So i'm trying to find that truck that is well maintained and low miles, i know it may be impossible to find, but...That is why I thought that 98 would be a good choice given the fact that he has kept it very well maintained low miles, but the price he is asking is a bit out of my range.
I have also been watching this one:

Stay away from the Freelander.
Dont beafraid to low ball the guy, when I bought mine they were asking $5800, it booked at $6200, I drove it home for $4500 with tax.
I offered him $4000, it had been sitting on his lot for 6 months, one owner dealer serviced from day one, 152,000 miles.
It needed some TLC, that was April 2007.
Test drive it, if you fall in love then start negotiating with the guy, if he wont budge then walk and leave him your number and when he is ready to sell it have him call you.
Just make sure that you do NOT tell him how much you have to spend.

I'd ask him for a complete list of things he's (or other people) have done to it in terms of maintenance. The thing is, if he's done a lot to it, and given it's low mileage, you might be better off paying more for it and just enjoying it, rather than getting one cheap and spending months of paying a shop to fix little things.
I have a 98 that I paid $3500 for but my leather seats aren't as nice as the one you're looking at (a weakness with Discos), and I had a whole bunch of things to iron out to get it to where I want it to be. I can do all of it myself. If I had to pay a shop, I'd be a lot poorer and less enthusiastic. That happens quite a bit to new land rover owners ...they get one cheap with a lot of enthusiasm, then seemingly get nickle and dimed to death fixing the little things on a 15yr old vehicle. No matter what, though, you will still have the joy of repairing some things on it. It's inevitable on a vehicle of that age. But I think your idea of paying more for a better unit is a great idea. 98s are easy to work on too. Very straight forward IMO.
Good luck

That thing isn't going anywhere!!! back in Feb I found a 2000 DII with 92k white in color and in great condition. The owner was asking $8900!!! Ridiculous !!!! I knew that it wasn't going to move and I offered the owner 6k cash, she declined politely which I expected and told her to contact me if she couldn't move it. What do you know, a month later she called back and willing to deal. She was not thrilled about the deal but it is a buyers market with these things. I have found that KBB doesn't hold much credence with Disco owners and after driving one for a while I see why. Try to take into account that you WILL BE SPENDING MONEY on this vehicle, so far on the one that I bought I have replaced the plugs, starter, O2 sensors and water pump myself. If i had paid the dealer to do this the $120/hr labor rate would have added up quick!! Happy hunting!!!
He has done a lot to it, based on the emails we have been trading. I'm thinking it is a good deal and I like the point you make about paying a little extra for something that has been well maintained. Now I guess the question is do I pull the trigger or like Frank says wait on it?
